Daily Grind

Sunrise on the tel

Because we worked outdoors in the summer Israeli heat, our schedules were a little a-typical. A normal dig day at Dor looked something like this:

4:00 am - wake up
4:25 am - coffee and cookies, board the buses
5:00 am - arrive at Dor, begin unloading the container
5:30 am - digging begins!
7:00 am - peanut butter break, 10 mins
9:00 am - breakfast at the Glass House Museum, 1 hour
11:15 am - fruit break, 10 mins
1:00 pm - end of dig day, board buses back to Kfar Galim
1:30 pm - lunch
~free time~
4:00 pm - pottery washing/reading
6:00 pm - lecture for field schools
7:00 pm - dinner
~evenings free~

For six weeks, Monday through Friday, this was my life. The only change in schedule was that we were free after 1pm on Fridays, to allow for weekend travel and preparation for Shabbat. It was a pretty greuling experience and I honestly don't know if we all really got used to waking up so early. Towards the end of the season we would wake up about a half hour later because of the change in sunrise time - it's no fun unloading the container and then having to wait to work.

From the schedule it's easy to tell that our days revolved around food and when we got our next break. Peanut butter break was most everyone's favorite. It was the most needed, by that point you were getting into the groove of work and needing some fuel. A hot tea and peanut butter/nutella sandwich always hit the spot.

Glorious bread waiting to be eaten for peanut butter break
